And I thought my problems were bigger…

Whenever I get time I try my best not to miss this television show called “Lift Karade”.
This show is anchored by Karan Johar the famous director/ producer of Hindi Films and the show is produced in association of Yash Raj Films and Sony Television.

Lift Karade has a very simple format but an amazing concept. Like any other reality shows these days, the participants compete against each other to prove that they are the number one fan of the invited celebrity of the week. I thought that is the reason the show is called lift karade, as a common man you get a chance to meet your role model. There is another element of this show that they also help an individual who is in serious need of financial help. I think that is the prime reason the show is called lift karade.

How?
These participants have to do some real time selling and earn money; the participant who earns the maximum will get a chance to meet their role model. The money they earn is multiplied hundreds of times and is given to this particular needy.

This week story was on Swarna Kaur, an 80 years old lady (mother and a grand mother) from a very small village in Punjab. Trust me friends after watching the entire show reel on Swarna Kaur the first thing I did, thanked god for whatever I am blessed with. My problems seemed like a micro-organism front of hers.

Her family consists of three members, her son and two grand children. Son is in his 40’s but is mentally unstable and is nothing more than just any other still object lying in her house. A major road accident was the reason for his condition. His wife left him and the two children couple of years back as she didn’t wanted to mess up her life with such a man. Swarna has two more sons but they also chose not to help her out and the brother and always kept themselves away from this family. Swarna’s house hold condition is miserable; there is hardly anything to eat and no money for other necessities.

Although, at this stage of life Swarna is helpless but she has not lost hopes and is doing whatever possible to bring up the two grand children and also take care of mentally unstable son. Swarana is illiterate and not even a skilled laborer so getting some monthly paying job is out of the question. I was in tears when I watched the way she manages to get some food for the family. She cleans and collects cow-dung from every house in the village and in return the villagers just give the family some food to eat and at times some money. I was shocked to know that someone in this world was still dependent on this type of batter system, which was taught to me in my 4th grade at school under a topic called obsolete civil systems of the society.

We get so irritated and frustrated when there is a power-cut at home or stuck in middle of a traffic jam or bad day at work or an argument with a colleague or a delay in salary and we end up saying things like life sucks etc etc. Guys, just for a heck of it try to be without food for just 2 days and you will definitely realize how difficult it is. Think about people like Swarna, who are actually handicap in managing their one time daily meal and also at times the entire family sleeps without food. I am sure our biggest of the problems are tiny front of such actual problems. Let us all appreciate and thank god for whatever we are blessed with.

As they say, no matter how good or bad the time is; it definitely changes one day.

Swarna must have never thought in her wildest dreams that someone sitting thousands of kilometers away from her at Mumbai has come up with such a concept which will change her life forever. Truly, this show 100% stands up to its name “Lift Karade”. She received an amount of rupees eleven lakh from this show. Plus a lakh more, personally donated by the legendary actor Dharmendra (celebrity of the week).

Learning - no matter whatever downs we are going through in our lives, we must never lose hopes and keep fighting because no matter how good or bad the time is; it definitely changes one day.

  1. The learning u stated is very true but this was her luck that this happened to her i mean the good end!!! there are many many more such stories which we cant even think about. The outcme what i could take out frm your blog is that money was the solution to her problems which i do not agree with.

  2. A true fact you have shown above. U know, my grandfather used to teach us one thing "Whenever in life you feel that you don't have enough and as humans we always strive for more and more and more.....". You should see the people who doesn't even poses the general necessities of life like food, shelter etc. I tell you this is when u will thank god for everything he has given to you and you will be satisfied with what you have....

One thing we should never lose is our hope and trust on the supreme power and yes....one day the situations will definitely change.....all we need to do is work our way towards our goal!

  4. Even i like the show just because this reaches the needy instead of donating to a society. its always good to help needy the way you can instead of joining some organisations and donating them or the religious org. blindly (which 90% of the people do in india ) without even knowing where your money is going. and yes your one dine out can save someone's life , be generous and kind. Moral of the story we should follow these footsteps may be our little effort could make atleast one life better.

  5. Very true that we are very much blessed and lucky that atleast we are able to get the very basic needs of our life fulfilled. Not only the basic things we are able to fulfill our other desires also upto some extent. So the question is that,we should only thank the god for this and enjoy what ever we have or we should take some responsibility that comes with this blessing of god.So we should spend a little from our day to day effort to help people who are in these kind of situations.I said effort not money , this is so because money alone can't solve their problem totally ,they require support.

  8. @SG..you pointed out "Hope". Yes, I do believe that hope never dies, those who can not expect or do not expect, just live on hope. It's a synonym of almighty.

To reiterate what you said, we must thank for what we have rather than sulking over what we don't have. It's a human psychology that we tend to compare ourselves with those who are better than us, precisely we develop a greed to possess those materialistic things which a rich man carries with him.

Doing a comparison with what is better than us or having an aim to attain all those materialistic items is not always bad but when and in what situation of life to do those comparisions is a trick and maturity which as humans we still need to learn. And the one who masters this art, leads a very content and peaceful life.

    Thanks for sharing this Saurabh.

    Cheers!

  9. Poor or rich, young or old, straight or gay; everyone has problems that are insurmountable to themselves. As my friends and I say: "Nobody dies a virgin; Life Fs everyone"

  10. Yash Raj Films and Sony Television is really really doing awesome job. They gave new dimension to the reality show instead of conducting for fun. What jyoti said was true only "we are very much blessed and lucky that at least we are able to get the very basic needs of our life fulfilled".
Thanks to Saurabh for sharing this article..

  12. So, thru the post i wanted to say specifically two things

    1) We should always thank for what we have; with that i am not concluding that one should not thrive for more
    2) No matter how big is the problem one should face it out the way this lady is doing at such an old age

  13. Everyone has got problems it is like one has to wait for the right time (one should be lucky enough for that) + its not important that every problem would have a solution. We need to live with few problems and learn to move on in life.

  15. I really like the way you presented the issue. There are two things that struck me immediately after reading your post - 1. that we have become so immune to the problem that we have to watch a TV show to realize that more than half of Indians are barely surviving. Honestly, how many half naked boys, overworked old women do we see working at construction sites daily, every hour...?
    2. That money is not the solution - as someone already commented. No doubt the show provides more than a fillip to the family as money is a potent means to move forward...there is something entirely different that is really needed. Not only for those few families, but millions of Indians who are below poverty line and don't have enough to eat. This something is is sustainable help - something that helps them build up their lives, get integrated in their communities better... money helps, but awareness of opportunities, self-help and i guess some empathy and support from us - the privileged ones - too is needed. We can always help by doing a little - not in money..in terms of our time and knowledge. If we look around us, we'll get ample opportunity to make a difference...

  17. This remimded me of a story I read long back. A motivational speaker was once called in for a speech at a co-operative farming society at Ohio. This was a year when everything was going bad. The farmers had a very bad season, there were high debts and the stock market was at the verge of crashing. So the speaker went on the stage and looked around the entire hall and said, "So you people are facing a hard time?? Well I have seen tougher time than you. Please dont think I am telling you some made up story to cheer you up but this is what happened to me. I was born in california in a small family. My father was farmer and we had 6 members in the family to feed. In a way we had to struggle everyday to meet ends. Everyday we sat at the table for supper I would see my father praying to Jesus. We had this picture of Jesus hanging at the wall of our living room with a quote, "KEEP LOOKING TO JESUS". We struggeled everyday. That year the drought had hit the farmers of california so hard that almost all sold off their lands and moved to other parts. But my father was resilient and he decided to stay back. One day the inevitable happened. California is famous for tornados. That day a huge black funnel shaped tornado loomed at the horizon. It gradually started moving toward us. We packed up what ever we could take and ran for safty. For the next one hour the tornado's wrath was felt across our neighburhood. Once it was over we all went to see what has left out of our farmhouse. Our house was blown away and thrown at a distance. Our livestocks were killed. I could see tears rolled down my father's eyes as he inspected the horrible sight. As we went near to our blown away house, I saw my father picking up a part of that Jesus picture, with only the words written, "KEEP LOOKING".
We shifted to a nearby place and started to fight back to life again. My father managed to convince the local bank for a loan to start off everything once again. Everything started falling back to place. 5 years down the line, a miracle happened. The government found oil reserves in that area and the value of our land skyrocketed to few million dollers. We sold it off and my father died a millionaire. All he did was, he took "KEEP LOOKING" as a message from from Jesus and kept on looking." To this, the entire hall started clapping. There was a ray of hope in everyones eys as the speaker said, " KEEP LOOKING!"

Tough times never last but tough people do. :)
